I have a special surprise for my readers today! Mother’s Day is right around the corner and I’ve gotten together with some of the most generous and inspiring bloggers to bring you the “Let’s Spoil Mom, Mother’s Day Giveaway” that we are hoping will bless your socks off!
Mothers Day Giveaway
Not only am I participating to give away some awesome prizes to bless one lucky mom, I’m sharing 10 Important Things my Mom has Taught me. It’s a ‘Dear Mom’ letter where I thank my mom for some of the wonderful things she’s done. I’m sharing even more encouraging letters at the bottom of this post, so scroll on to see even more uplifting ideas.
I hope this letter will inspire you to write something special to your mom, or another female mentor in your life. Any person who has nurtured you like a mom can be celebrated on Mother’s Day… and I say, the more… the merrier. So have some fun, and show some love to a special person in your life.
A Letter to my Mom
Before I share my letter to my mom, I think there are some things you should know about her. She has overcome incredible odds. Her father abandoned my mom, her mother, and her brother shortly after my mom was born. With not enough money to care for two kids, my grandmother had to send my mom away to live with her mother (my great-grandmother) in Puerto Rico. My mom lived there in a house with dirt floors and a heap of kids sleeping on a single mattress at night.
Sometime after my grandmother remarried, my mom was able to return to her mom and brother in Brooklyn, New York. They lived in a very poor neighborhood and my mom’s brother got into trouble with drugs.
Somehow my mom survived the challenges that come with near poverty and avoided the problems that plagued her brother. She raised three girls and is still an amazing and vibrant woman and grandmother today. She did not allow her past or her circumstances to define her – she made her own way. She is very much an inspiration to myself and my sisters – and to many others.
I wrote this letter to my mom more than seven years ago, but the words still ring true today. I’ve learned so many wonderful lessons from my mom and I hope sharing this letter is a blessing to others.
This photo of my mom, myself and sisters were taken in the same year I wrote this Mother’s Day letter to my mom.
10 Important Lessons my Mom Taught Me
Mom,
On this Mother’s Day, I just want to take the opportunity to thank you for being my mom. As I get older and start to plan a family, I am in awe of all the sacrifices you’ve made to nurture us, teach us, love us and bring us into the world prepared for the challenges that would come our way. Of the things you’ve taught me, the ones that bless me daily include things like:
1.) To clean the whole house, just start in a corner, clean the corner and then you can go from there.
2.) If you see someone else succeeding at something, just know that you can do it too… it may take a little longer but there is nothing you can’t do.
3.) You could try to avoid the hard work of life (in school, at work, in life) and it will hurt me (as your mom) but it’s going to hurt you more
4.) Your friends will come and go, but you will always be sisters
5.) You taught me to dream, dream big and follow those dreams, and you encouraged me in all my interests – artwork, my career, everything (likewise, I love to watch you dance)
6.) You modeled Christian love to me, agape love – the kind of love that loves in an unselfish way – that loves for the betterment of the person being loved, you always wanted the best for me
7.) You modeled self-sufficiency and taught me how to cook, balance career and family, and have time for other interests
8.) You are always such a lady – always so put together with a polished appearance and just a sense of beauty in the way you carry yourself, I am so grateful that you taught me to care about my appearance and to take care of myself
9.) You were humble, thanking God along the way, you still do – and I am reminded to do the same
10.) You believe in me, even when I run out of belief, and you’ve taught me to trust God – even when I’m not sure how everything will turn out
I thank God for you mom. And I am amazed by how blessed and privileged I am to be your daughter. You set myself and my sisters free in this world to make a positive difference. We are an extension of you! I can never be far from you because when I see pictures of myself or I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror I see you.
I am so incredibly blessed by you mom and I want you to know it through and through. You are relevant, significant, and such an important part of my life. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’ reflect upon something you taught me – and I am only all too aware that your influence will become more relevant in my life as I get older.
You truly are a Proverbs 31 woman – Thank you for loving me. Happy Mother’s Day! I love you.
