Sight words are words that are frequently used in children’s books. Dolch studied children’s books and created a list of the most used words and called them sight words. Sight words are also often words that are not easy to sound out. They can break the rules of traditional sounding-out methods of reading. Teaching a young child who is an emergent reader (a child who is noticing and taking an interest in written words and reading) the sight words will give them a leg-up on reading comprehension. FREE Sight Words Flash Cards
Here is a picture of the sight words flash cards after I cut them out and stacked them.
Our three and-a-half year-old loves books. He has expressed a high interest in reading. My desire is to teach him how to read as soon as he is ready. To help with the process I’ve done some research and I’ll share some of the things I’ve found in my preschool alphabet series that features reading – I am starting the series this week. But first, I wanted to share some FREE Sight Words Flash Cards I’ve created. Subscribe Here to download your FREE Sight Words Flashcards. In traditional classrooms sight words are typically taught by ability-level. However, my son seems to be very good at memorizing things, so my plan is to start exposing him to the sight words now. I don’t have any expectations that he’ll memorize all the words but if he does remember more advanced words it can only help him. If you’d like to know by what age most elementary schools focus on sight words, please see the chart below.

This week I’m launching the letter A in our learning to read series and I just thought I’d share a picture of how we are using our sight words in our reading efforts. This picture is taken from a classic Dr. Seuss story “Go Dog, Go.” It’s part of a collection bound as one book titled, “Big Blue Book of Beginner Books” My son loves the story so much that he has almost memorized the entire book. If you’d like to check for signs of your child’s reading readiness, please read my post – Ready for Kindergarten – Reading Comprehension. We’ve been reading books to our little boys since the time they were only a few months old. Reading to children is a great way to spend time together and help them develop a love of reading.
Here you can see that I’ve added our sight words flash cards to the page that reads “The dogs are all going around, and around, and around. “Go around again!”” This page contains the sight words: are, all, around, and again. As we read the book I add the cards and I point out the words.
By using blue tack to attach the cards to the pages, I can highlight words in books that we already have. And I can teach him from a book that he already loves and is familiar with. Sugar Ants used string to create some fun games with sight words – you can check that post out here: Creative Sight Word Practice with String and Ping Pong with Sight Words There Is Just One Mommy also has some great ideas for activities with sight words in her post Sight Word Practice.

I’ve attached another widget here if you’d like to look for DVDs that can help you introduce sight words to your preschooler.
This week as we launch our Learn to Read Series starting with the letter “A” I’ll be giving subscribers a free downloadable Letter “A” activity pack complete with 18 different activities for the letter “A”. This will include the letter A sight words and a bunch of fun things you can do with your preschooler.
I used kite string and a hole punch to attached our letter A sight words together. I’ll move them to a jump ring to make them easier to remove and use in books and on charts.
