One of our family’s favorite things to do is read and tell stories. Since I have a 3-1/2 year-old and a 23 month-old (these were their ages when I originally shared this post), it’s sometimes a challenge to keep both boys engaged. But I’ve found that one way to keep their interest is to animate stories with puppets.
FREE Farm Animal Puppets
I created these farm animal puppets to help children see the stories from books come to life. When I look at these puppets I think of classics like “The Three Little Pigs” or songs like “Old McDonald had a Farm.” I think grown-ups and kids alike can have so much fun with these storytelling puppets.
There are six animals including:
- Horse
- Pig
- Sheep
- Cow
- Goat
- Chicken
To go along with these adorable puppets, I wanted to share with my readers a list of great books for use with these puppets. You can have the puppets act out the characters in these books, or you can use the puppets to enhance and create activities around the books. Encourage your children to be creative and have fun!
These free puppets were also shared as part of a guest post at UpsideDownHomeschooling.com. Heather was doing a series called “Homeschooling through the Holidays” to help homeschooling families. The series has ended but I had fun sharing these with her readers too.
These FREE Farm Animal Puppets are one way you can make learning fun in your home. It’s a craft, a teaching tool, and a way to inspire imagination all rolled into one.

Books to go along with the Farm Animal Puppets
Some wonderful books to inspire learning and play for young children (affiliate links for your convenience):
Touch and Feel: Farm (Touch & Feel) – A tactile learning experience perfect for children less than 24 months.
Melissa & Doug Animal Puzzle Book – This is a great coordinating book if your child no longer puts small things in his or her mouth.
Moo Baa La La La – A fantastic book to introduce young children to animal sounds. A perfect way to use the puppets to sound out the various noises animals make.
Barnyard Dance! (Boynton on Board) – Using the puppets to animate this story would make for loads of fun and laughter. Let your kids in on the action – with a puppet they can dance with on their own.
