This week we started our letter O study starts with an easy craft. Make the letter “O” with tiny cheerio “o’s”.
A heavy emphasis is being placed on reading in our preschool at home efforts. If you’re looking for books to complement our study on the letter “O”, I recommend:
- Owl Babies – An adorable story about three owl babies who miss their mommy when she is off hunting for food. My boys love this story.
- Good Luck Baby Owls – Two little owls want to learn to fly–to fly high in the sky. But kind Daddy Owl says: “Not yet. You’re far too small.” This lyrical story about little ones impatient to become big will resonate with children everywhere. Stunning collage paintings perfectly capture the warmth and energy of the irresistible babies as they stretch and grow and prepare to test their wings.
- LeapFrog LeapReader Learn to Read, Volume 1 (works with Tag) – includes a collection of books for early readers. We’ve started using LeapReader in our home. My son enjoys using it with some guidance from me. I think it’s a great way to highlight the words in books and get young children interested in reading.
In my downloadable printables you’ll find flashcards for 20 words with pictures as well as sight words for your preschooler. For information about what sight words are appropriate for pre-K, kindergarten and up through grade 3, please see my post, sight words.
To supplement our letter O activities for the week, I also use God’s Little Explorers. Our letter O coincides with week 21 in GLE. In God’s Little Explorer’s the bible story for the week of letter O study is the story of Martha & Mary – from Luke 10:38. In the story Martha and Mary have opposing or opposite approaches to spending time with Jesus. To emphasize the story, Stacie suggests going around your house and looking for opposites. This is a great way to introduce young children to the concept of opposites. Stacie has some wonderful ideas. Click here to learn more about God’s Little Explorers.
Our set-up for crafts is at a Mickey and Friends Activity Table. It’s perfect for preschoolers with an easily accessible table and chair height. For our lesson materials I use a Board Dudes 18″ x 22″ Magnetic Dry Erase Board. It’s a great way to display our flashcards so that I can review them with my eldest.
The Learn to Read Preschool Alphabet Letter O Printable Pack includes seven coloring pages and six do-a-dot pages. Coloring is a great way to foster concentration and teach creativity. Do-a-dot pages can be completed with paints, markers, crayons, stickers, cotton-balls, and other arts and crafts supplies.
This printable pack includes loads of colorful owls. These are great for counting, matching, sorting and more. You can also use them in an oak tree printable for fun math games.
As I mentioned there are at least 30 activities in the Letter O Preschool Activity Pack.
