8 Solutions for Snack Attacks
My kids love snacks, and as the warm weather comes to an end and everyone heads into a “Back to School” mindset, I’m stocking up on family favorites to have ready to eat whenever my kids get hungry.
One thing I keep in mind, is to create and have snacks that are allergy friendly. Peanut butter infused snacks are not allowed in many schools, so I try to teach my kids to eat peanut butter free snacks to get them used to the flavors and variety.

High Protein Energy Bites Recipe
This fool-proof recipe for High Protein Energy Bites tastes like peanut butter but is created using allergy-friendly ingredients. They’re super easy to make and require no baking – just mix, roll and eat!
They say “necessity is the mother of invention” – or maybe it should say mothers are the mother of invention 😉 – so I created these chewy, sweet High Protein Energy Bites. I’m always looking for ways to sneak more fiber and protein into my kids’ diets. Even better news, you can stock these in the fridge and pack them into kids’ lunch boxes, because they are peanut-free snacks.
Now these energy bites have a nutty flavor, but if you like chocolate, you can also throw in 1/2 cup of chocolate chips to get a peanut butter cup flavor with these energy bites – I know – it’s crazy good!
High Protein Snacking
I think kids and moms alike will enjoy these High Protein Energy Bites. It’s the perfect solution for parents looking for high protein snacking options that are great for kids. Perfect for after-school or on-the-go snacking and great for parents with kids enrolled in sports needing a quick snack after practice. You can easily adapt the recipe to add raisins, chocolate chips, and other dried fruits and nuts to taste.
Ingredients for High Protein Energy Bites
- 1 cup rolled (not instant) oats
- ½ cup nut butter: try Almond Butter, Hazelnut Spread, WOW Butter, Sunbutter, or a Soy based nut flavored butter
- ½ cup ground flax seed
- ½ cup whey protein powder
- ⅓ cup honey
- ½ cup powdered milk
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional) OR
- 1/2 cup dried cranberries and candied walnut pieces (optional)
Step 1: Gather ingredients. Put all your ingredients into a bowl {leave out the powdered milk}. As long as you have the 1/2 cup of nut butter or nut butter alternative, and 1/3 cup honey – you can add any combination of 4-5 other 1/2 cup ingredients to create your own version of these energy bites. As I mentioned earlier, adding 1/2 a cup of chocolate chips turns this recipe into something akin to a peanut butter cup.
Step 2: Mix the ingredients. Using a spatula or spoon, mix all ingredients until they are throughly combined. Make sure that any dried fruit or nuts have been chopped into small 1/4″ to 1/2″ pieces before mixing.
Step 3: Roll into 1/2″ balls. Use your spoon or spatula to scoop out small chunks of the mix and gently roll the mixture into balls approximately 1/2″ in diameter. You can use parchment paper to keep them separated.
I used extra small energy bites for this recipe to make it easier for my four-year-old to snack on. Plus, at this size, you can fit them into our favorite snack box solution: Snack in a Box. More snack storage solutions below.
If you would like to cut down on the stickiness of these energy bites, roll them in the powdered milk until coated. You can use regular powdered milk, or buttermilk. You could also use powdered sugar – but I was trying to use something other than sugar for this recipe.
Storage and Shelf Life
Store the High Protein Energy Bites in an airtight container in the fridge for a week or freeze them for up to three months in the freezer. You can take these out in the morning and by lunch they’ll be defrosted and ready to eat. This recipe yields approximately 36 High Protein Energy Bites.
