FREE Minions Play Doh Mats and Minions Bento Box Tutorial

Here I’ll share some FREE Minions Play Doh Mat Printables and Minons Bento Box Tutorial with tips for a fun and creative lunch for kids just in time for back to school.

Have you seen the adorable cartoon characters known as “Minions”? They’re funny, entertaining, and amazingly human-like in their mistakes.

I wanted to create completely edible “Minions” themed bento boxes for back to school so I combined some of my kids’ favorites – a 1/2 a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, grapes, blueberries, banana, Captain Crunch cereal, and Quaker® Chewy Chocolate Chip Bars turned into mini Minions!

I paired the lunches with some cute spiral notebooks and Minions flashcards for a truly Minions-themed lunch and post-lunch activity with doodling and flashcard fun! You could easily use these snacks and play doh mats for a Minions themed kid’s birthday party.

The boys loved these Minion-themed bento box lunches, and here I’ll share an easy tutorial for turning Quaker® Chewy Granola bars into Minions AND some fun free play doh mats for kids. The play doh mats can be used as a pattern, puzzle, or placemat for some extra kid fun with Minions. Keep reading to learn more about these free printables.

Materials needed to create Minions Bento Boxes and Minion shaped granola snack

I found just about everything you see here at Walmart.

Two 9″ x 6 1/2″ plastic boxes with lids – Ours are clear with blue snap handles
One box of Quaker® Chewy Bars, Chocolate Chip (Value Pack – 24 bars)
One box of Cap’n Crunch®, Crunch Berries (Value Box – 20% more)
1 Package of rice sticks (to thread Captain Crunch cereal onto)
1 Tube of cookie icing in white (to act as glue)
1 Tube of cookie icing in blue (overalls)
1 Container of large candy eyes
1 Package of candy melts in yellow (Minion color)
1 Package of candy melts in black (detail)
1 Package of small marshmallows (teeth)
1 Package of licorice that includes yellow licorice (for the arms)
1 Package small black jelly beans (button)
1 Oval cookie cutter (to cut corners)
Optional – in addition to the Minion shaped granola bar you see featured here, you can easily add a sandwich, fruit, and other lunch items to complete your bento box. The Minions love bananas, so I had to include bananas in our bento boxes!

FREE Minions Play Doh Mats and Minions Bento Box Tutorial

Step 1: Connect two granola bars and trim into Minion shape. I used the white cookie icing to connect two granola bars side by side. I then used my oval cookie cutter to cut the corners. I used a butter knife to trim the legs and feet. If any pieces crumbled, I just glued them back together again with cookie icing.

Step 2: Add color and detail. Candy melts can be melted in bowls in the microwave. I microwaved the yellow and painted it onto the granola bar using a spoon. I melted the black candy melt in a bowl and loaded it into a syringe (it’s actually a medicine dispenser) to paint on the black detail.

Step 3: Add candy pieces and detail. The Minion’s eyes are large candy eyes. The teeth are made from marshmallows cut in half. I painted on the blue overalls using blue cookie icing. The arms are made from yellow licorice pieces trimmed to fit, and painted with yellow candy melt.

The candy melt tastes like chocolate. It starts out sticky but hardens to the consistency of chocolate when dry.

If the cookie icing starts to pool, move the granola bar Minions to a wire rack to allow the excess to drip free. The final detail is a black jelly bean that I cut in half to create a button for the overalls. Both the one-eyed and two-eyed Minions featured in our Minion-inspired bento boxes are completely edible.

Step 4: Once dry, pack your Minions’ lunch boxes. I created a rainbow of Captain Crunch cereal by threading pieces of the colorful cereal onto rice sticks (I think they should be called rice threads). I layered a background of green grapes for the ground and blueberries for the sky. At the bottom of the bento box, the Minions are standing on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I found some cute paper chalkboard signs that I included as bento box signage. For my kid’s lunches I would just draw a heart or smiley face to remind them how much I love them.
