This post is an update from a post originally published in 2014. I’ve updated the signs to remove the year “2014” and all of them are blank except for the Superman sign – which has “2015” on it. Per reader request, I’ve also added a place card for each grade level from preschool through 8th grade. I hope you enjoy these fun back to school signs!
I don’t know about you, but my kids have some real favorites when it comes to cartoons and superheros. And tis the season for “back to school”. So I decided to get a little creative and create some fun First Day of School Signs. These signs are FREE. If you take a photo with your child and one of the signs, please send me a copy. I’d love to do a blog post and feature some of my awesome readers and their kiddos!
You can easily print these and invite your child to pose with the sign. My hope is that these signs will make picture taking lots of fun. Fun = smiles and smiles = better pictures. 🙂

About These Characters
The characters I’ve used here are images I found that have no license requirements and are hosted on graphic sites that have these listed as public domain. I only use images that are hosted publically. If you’re looking for images like these you can find them with a simple google search. I was able to create signs for “school” and “preschool” in most formats. Each download consists of a few pages and most include both formats.
Back to School Signs
I think everyone will love these super cute back to school signs. This “band-aide” sign is based on the Doc McStuffins cartoon. To download any file, click on the blue “download now” icon beneath each image. You’ll need to download each sign individually.
This Nickelodeon themed-sign is bright and colorful and modeled after “Dora the Explorer.”
If your little princess enjoys “Sofia the First,” she’s likely to also enjoy this lavender and gold sign with lots of swirl and sparkle.
Our family enjoys the classic Superman cartoons of 1942 on YouTube so I created a Superman-themed first day of school sign. If you love Superman you’ll want to explore my Superman themed birthday party for some great Superhero celebration ideas.
My youngest is a huge fan of Cookie-Monster from Sesame Street and my eldest loves Elmo. This is a first day of school sign based upon Sesame Street. If your kids enjoy Sesame Street you need to check out my post for FREE Sesame Street Birthday Party printables.
Everyone loves Mickey Mouse! Here I’ve included a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse “my first day of school” sign. If your child loves Mickey Mouse, you’ll also enjoy my tutorial on a “Mickey Mouse Cake you Can Make.”
This sign is a play off the movie “Frozen”. We have Sphen and Anna in a shadow format with some brilliant snowflakes and a tiara.
My sisters and I always loved the Disney princesses, and this back to school sign is inspired by Sleeping Beauty and Belle from Beauty and the Beast. If you have a little princess in your life, you’ll love my 30 page FREE princess printable set in my Princess Birthday Party post.
If your little superhero enjoys The Avengers, you may like this back to school sign inspired by Captain America. Our family held a little Superhero Breakfast Party earlier this year with free Superhero Play Doh Mats, and you can also find Avenger Play Doh mats at the attached links and posts.
The Captain America set also includes place cards for grade level. You can add these to any back to school sign.
I also created a very simple clap board sign for families who like simplicity.
My boys are huge Superman fans, so they both opted for the “Superman” version of our back to school signs.
I know I’m partial but I think my boys are so cute!
