I’m calling this Southern Pecan Pie because it’s inspired by the south.
You see, my Dad lives in Houston, Texas. And there are these grand old Pecan Trees lining a stream near his home. You’d have to see it to believe the beautiful canopy of trees. There are benches to sit at, sidewalks to walk along and loads and loads of pecans. You can take your kids and let them find pecans in the grass. It’s beautiful and peaceful. If I lived in the area, I’d walk this path every day.
This is the backdrop that inspired this Pie. This Southern Pecan Pie recipe. The boys and I had been out picking up pecans and my dad and husband asked me – how about a Pecan Pie?
It’s moist, and yet, the nuts make it crunchy. I even added a touch of shredded pumpkin for fun (but that step is totally optional).
Now, I would not try to pick and shell your own pecans. It would take hours. But, buy the freshest pecans you can find. It helps if there is a farmer’s market nearby. Oh, and you are in Texas or someplace like Alabama or Georgia.

Easy Recipe: Southern Pecan Pie Ingredients
Now I’ll admit, there is one tiny secret to a successful pecan pie. Want to know what it is? Fresh Pecans. For this little pie-making effort I threw in a bit of shredded pumpkin. I was just experimenting with flavor. It does not impact the taste much, so I say – it’s optional (you can leave it out).
- 1 Pastry Pie Shell – get a deep dish variety (frozen is fine)
- 3/4 cup Light OR Dark Corn Syrup
- 3 eggs with yolks
- 1 1/4 cups light brown sugar

- 2 cups pecans – chopped or halved
