With two young boys in our home, we love to play with race cars, race tracks, and all things with wheels and motor sounds. I wanted to turn our race track play into a learning experience for our boys so I created a fun Race Car Activity Pack for kids with 12 pages of road signs and race car inspired decorations to enhance our race car play. In addition, this post includes a DIY Tutorial to create a Checkered Flag and Race Track padded play mat – perfect for toddler play on tile or hardwood floors. You can see the checkered flag play mat propped up against the cardboard tri-fold in the photo below.
Our race track activity pack includes some fun printable road signs that I used to decorate around the track. To post the signs I simply used blue tack and wood clothespins to create easy signage that is easy to position and pick up when play is finished. If your son or daughter enjoys playing with cars, trucks and wheeled vehicles, you could easily use these for a play-date, race car birthday party, or to teach children about road signs and race car driving.

Tutorial: Directions to create Printables with DIY Checkered Flag and Race Track Play Mat
My final Checkered Flag and Race Track Play Mat measures 34″ long by 19″ wide. At just under three feet, it fits in the bottom of a shopping cart to offer a toddler a race car play track and a padded cushion for playing while mommy shops {bonus = fun for all}!
Step 1: Print and cut out the Printables. I like to use a heavy card stock when I create a virtual world with paper. It holds up better. Sometimes I laminate these creations to help them last longer. In this case I left them unlamented to reduce shine in the photos. All of the signs pictured here are printed in color on heavy card stock. Signs are secured with wood clothespins and blue tack. The download for the printables is towards the bottom of this post.
Step 2: Cut a rectangle for the Checkered Flag. The roll of clear gift wrap that I used for this project was 40″ tall. This created plenty of boarder around the rectangle cut to create the play mat. Cut a rectangular piece from the clear gift wrap that includes the length of the gift wrap (40″) wide by 24″ in length (a few excess inches to ensure an easy 19″ rectangle on the inside). You’ll need to cut two equal pieces to create a front and back side for the play mat.
Step 3: Cut a Pattern Guide for the Checkered Flag. To create the checkered flag I cut a pattern guide. The tape is almost two inches wide, so I made my guide 3 3/4″ wide by 6 inches long. It’s a blue piece of poster board that I placed under the clear gift wrap as I cut and positioned my black and white tape pieces to create the checkered flag pattern.
The final checkered flag had 6 columns and 5 rows of squares. Pictured here is a nearly complete checkered flag.
Step 4: Pad the activity play mat. Adding the sanitary pads to the underside of the checkered flag was easy. I just peeled off the wrapper and stuck the pads onto the flag.
The boys were excited to get their new Checkered Flag and Race Track play mat. Once I explained to them what I was doing they were happy to help me with assembly.
Step 5: Decorate the back side. I used clear packing tape to attach the second rectangle to the checkered flag. I trimmed the clear gift wrap as needed. To decorate the back of the checkered flag I created a white background and two racing strips. Perfect for race car fun on-the-go anywhere!
Step 6: Create an oval race track. I cut four corners first from black tape taped onto excess clear warp. Then I taped down the corners with clear tape onto the remaining clear gift wrap paper roll and attached the corners using more black tape.
I dotted the race track lines with pieces of white tape spaced at least four inches apart.
I laid out the oval race track and placed our toy race track on top. I added signage, toy cars, and our fun new race track activity mat for race car fun for the boys.
They played for nearly an entire day on this race car set up.
