“We’re going on a bear hunt, we’re going to catch a big one. What a beautiful day! We’re not scared…” is the sweet refrain of one of our family’s favorite children’s books, “We’re going on a Bear Hunt.” In the book, dad is taking his four children on a bear hunt. They don’t dress, or look like bear hunters, but in their hearts they are brave, courageous, and determined bear hunters.
I want to inspire a spirit of courage and adventure in our children, so our family staged a bear hunt and we invited a few of our friends to join us. With the printables included in this post, and the activity pack — you’ll have loads of fun activities for kids including puzzles, matching, coloring, a bear hunting map, and bear hunting crafts – perfect for family fun!
How to host a Bear Hunt
To create your own bear hunt at home, you’ll need a few bear hunt volunteers. We were fortunate enough to have some brave bear souls step forward for our bear hunt including Winnie the Pooh, Yogi Bear, a Kola bear, Polar bear, “Harry” the monkey, “Leo” the lion, and our light pink bear”Shelly.” I loved including non-bears in our hunt since it gave the boys a reason to think about bears vs. non bears. I encouraged my kids to give these bears and stuffed animals a “pep” talk before the hunt, and explained that our bears would need lots of hugs and TLC (tender loving care) during the hunt. We don’t want any bears or kids being injured; and we all want to be brave during our bear hunt.
Bear Hunt Foods and Snacks
Now, if you’re hosting a bear hunt, you’ll need some hearty eats and treats. For our bear hunt, I whipped up some egg salad sandwiches, fresh fruit and veggies, and served them with milk. I also created a “bear-y” special snack featuring a bear cup filled with yummy treats. Perfect for a kid’s birthday party or bear hunt!!!
In case you’d like to make some egg salad sandwiches at home. This is my friend Beth’s recipe. She and her daughter joined us on our bear hunt and she said it was ok for me to share her egg salad recipe with you.
Egg Salad Sandwich Recipe
Ingredients for an Egg Salad Sandwich Recipe
- 1 Dozen Eggs — hard boiled
- 3/4 Cup Mayonaise
- 2 Stalks of Celery — diced
- 1/4 Red Onion — minced
- 1/2 Teaspoon Dill Weed
- 1/4 Teaspoon Salt
- 1/4 Teaspoon Pepper
Directions to create an Egg Salad Sandwich
Dice the eggs, celery, and red onion. Mix in a large bowl adding mayonnaise, dill weed, salt and pepper. I used a silicone spatula to mix the egg salad together to keep the egg intact during mixing. Once throughly combined, spread the egg salad mixture 1/2 inch thick onto white bread and serve. For my little guys I cut the crust off and cut the sandwiches into small triangles.
Our Bear Cup Craft and Snack
I wanted to reward the boys for a day of bear hunting with a fun snack. I created a miniature bear craft using NABISCO Go-Paks! You can find these at the Walmart check-out counters for $1 and they come in a variety of cookie flavors including the ones I used for our bear hunt: TEDDY GRAHAMS Honey Graham Snacks, Mini NILLA Wafers, Mini OREO Chocolate Sandwich Cookies, CHIPS AHOY! Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies, NUTTER BUTTER Bites Sandwich Cookies, and Mini OREO Golden Sandwich Cookies. I personally tested all of the cookies in our bear craft and I can honestly say they’re delicious!

Our bear-y special Bear Hunt
We ate our savory, egg salad sandwich lunch and then went outside for our bear hunt.
Beth’s duaghter, Anna, helped us hide the bears in our backyard. The boys had a blast “hunting” our bears and bringing them to the moms officiating the bear hunt. Some of the bears were hiding in the boy’s play set club house (a gift from my sister – thank you Tina!). Watching the boys pull the bears down from their hiding places was one of the high points of our bear hunt day.
Following our bear hunt excursion we all went inside to enjoy our bear hunt snack cups. Beth captured this beauty as I enjoyed some Chips AHOY! These bear hunt snack cups are just the right combination of creamy pudding and crunchy cookies — perfect after a day of chasing bear hunters! My mom is visiting and was able to enjoy the bear hunt with us.
From our gang of bear-hunters to yours — we hope you enjoy this fun activity for families. I was just so thankful to spend some time with family and friends and I hope this printable pack inspires you too.
