With two small children in the house, our kitty cat, Tigger, doesn’t always get the attention he deserves. It’s hard being a cat in a two boy household. How does a cat recover from all the hard work of lying around on the couch, rubbing up against the boys, chasing critters outside, and climbing up pine trees?
A Tropical Oasis
If Tigger is anything like mommy, he yearns for the long, warmer days of summer. He wishes he were on a tropical island somewhere drinking something fruity from a coconut.
Well, with snow still on the ground, we can’t give Tigger sand between his toes, but we can pretend! And that is just what we did this week. Secretly, mommy is living through Tigger on this project, and wishes she could be in a Cabana just like this one on a sunny beach on a tropical island somewhere!
Create a Tropical Oasis for your Cat
Creating this Kitty Cabana is almost as simple as wrapping a Christmas present. The only difference is the use of white school glue to secure everything in place. And of course, there is a Cabana curtain, a private in-room on-suite cat box, interior lighting, lush bedding, and coordinated accessories. Oh, OK, maybe it isn’t as simple as wrapping a gift box, but it’s not unlike making a fancy bow for it!
Materials needed for the Kitty Cabana
- 1 Container of White School Glue
- 1 Large Cardboard Box
- 1 Pair of Scissors
- 1 Roll of Clear Packing Tape
- 1 Roll of Clear Tape
- 1 Small Cat Litter Pan
- 1 Cat Toy
- 1 Package of Finger Lights*
- 2 Rolls of coordinating colors of gift wrap (they need to be wider than the cardboard box)
- 1 Container of Cat’s Pride® Fresh & Light Ultimate Care®
- Coordinating Scarves for the Cabana curtain and lush bedding (optional)
*We lit the interior of the box with finger lights called “Flash Fingerz”. A quick photo in case you’d like to see what they look like. Be very careful with these. Button batteries can be life-threatening for kids if swallowed. They make for fun light-up play, but I don’t let my kids around these unless they are being supervised.
Directions to create the Kitty Cabana
Step 1: Gather your materials. Having everything gathered together and ready to go makes creating this Kitty Cabana much easier.
Step 2: Unroll the gift wrap and place the box on top to measure. I did a “dry fit” of the wrapping paper around the box before I creased the paper and trimmed it to fit. Make sure to trim at the longest length to allow for folding and unfolding of the box flaps.
Step 3: Pour glue on the box surface. I poured glue liberally all over the surface of the box and then used a kitchen utensil to spread it more evenly over the surface. This project is a bit like hanging wallpaper and wrapping a Christmas present combined.
I knew I wanted to create a “Cabana” feel for our box, so I made sure the striped gift wrap was the prominent feature. If the paper tears while you’re planning the layout, just tape it back together on the underside.
Step 4: Wrap the box exterior in one direction and smooth out the paper. I wrapped the box in the vertical direction and smoothed out the surface of the paper against the glue with my hand.
Step 5: Trim to fit. Cut the corners to make it easy to fold down the flaps and tape them in place.
Once trimmed and folded, I was able to secure the ends on each side of the box.
Whenever I needed help, this little guy was at my side ready to hold the box, paper, or tape. I love creating crafts with my kids!
Step 6: Complete the box wrap. Once I had the box wrapped vertically, I addd the complementary blue color to the horizontal sides of the box to complete the “Cabana” look. I left the underside undecorated and taped everything off to complete the Cabana box.
Step 7: Create a Cabana pole. I taped a remnant of wrapping paper to one of the gift wrapping paper rolls and used it to create a Cabana pole. I just cut the pole at an angle on one end at just the right height to prop up the Cabana roof. I taped the top of the pole in place.
Step 8: Decorate your Cabana. We used finger lights to decorate the interior. We also hung a cat toy and curtains.
Step 9: Make the Cabana comfy. We added an on-suite bathroom to our Kitty Cabana and lush coordinated bedding. The other nice thing about this Kitty Cabana box is that you can slide a cat pan inside – in case you need to travel and want to take the cat toy and litter pan in an enclosed box with you. My son was very proud of our island oasis getaway!
In case you haven’t tried it, you should check out Cat’s Pride® Fresh & Light Ultimate Care®. I love that this product is up to 50% lighter! Our kitty litter box is normally downstairs in the basement and trucking clean and dirty litter up and down the stairs can be a weighty problem.
