We’re on the letter “P” in our learn to read series. “P” is such a great letter because there are so many fun words that start with “P”. You can pretend to be a pirate, play with puppets, or spend some time in a pool. You can make fun and creative lunches using pasta, pears, pineapple, and pizza.
If you’d like to see what we did last year including a table set-up for sensory items and activities for little ones for ages 22-40 months go to the post: Letter P. Learn to Read
To assess your preschooler’s readiness in the area of reading, I have a free chart in my post, Advancing Preschool Reading Behaviors. If you have a preschooler who knows their ABCs and who has expressed an interest in reading, this series of posts will be perfect for you. We’re on a journey to learn to read short words from either the list of Dolch sight words or short words that are easily represented with pictures. Learn to Read Preschool Alphabet Letter P
We start our preschool day with our preschool Morning Board. The morning board is a great way to teach preschooler about telling time, reading a calendar, identifying shapes, colors and numbers and so much more! For a complete list of our morning board printables click here: Morning Board.
This week we started our letter P study starts with some play. We visited our local swimming pool! Personally I think that is a great way to start any new letter study. The entire pdf file for the Learn to Read Preschool Alphabet Letter P pack is 60+ pages and 30+ activities for preschoolers (and maybe kindergarten too). It includes:
- Pirate Mask
- 11 Coloring Pages
- 1 Connect the Penguins
- Create your own igloo and penguins craft
- 5 Tracing Pages
- Penguin and Pig Puzzle Craft
- Penguin and Pig Puppet Craft
- Peach Lace-Up Card
- Cutting Practice
- Align and Count
- Counting and Organizing Penguins
- 20 flashcards with short words that start in “Pp”
- 7 Do-a-dot Pages
- Flashcards with letter “Pp” sight words
A snapshot of the “pig” puppet.
A heavy emphasis is being placed on reading in our preschool at home efforts. If you’re looking for books to complement our study on the letter “P”, I recommend:
- LeapFrog LeapReader Junior: Toddler Milestones Book Set (works with Tag Junior) – This set includes “Leap’s New Potty” – a great book for emergent readers AND helpful for parents who want to introduce the concepts of potty-training. My boys love these leap-reader books!
- Perfect Piggies Board Book – We LOVE Sandra Boynton’s books. They are fun to read and my boys enjoy all the silly pictures. Perfect Piggies is the the perfect letter “P” book!
- LeapFrog LeapReader Junior Book: Animals Around the World (works with Tag Junior) – This book introduces children to baby animals. It’s also perfect for studying the letter “P” as it includes a platypus, pig, and penguin in the story. The book includes 20 baby animals. Our family enjoys this as a bedtime story book.
In my downloadable FREE printables you’ll find flashcards for 20 words with pictures as well as sight words for your preschooler. For information about what sight words are appropriate for pre-K, kindergarten and up through grade 3, please see my post, sight words.
To supplement our letter P activities for the week, I also use God’s Little Explorers. Our letter P coincides with week 22 in GLE. In God’s Little Explorer’s the bible story for the week of letter P study is the story of the prodigal son – from Luke 15:11-32. To emphasize the story, Stacie centers crafts and activities around the pig from the feeding trough in the story. You can make a pig nose from a cardboard egg carton and paint it pink. Stacie has some wonderful ideas. Click here to learn more about God’s Little Explorers.
Our set-up for crafts is at a Mickey and Friends Activity Table. It’s perfect for preschoolers with an easily accessible table and chair height. For our lesson materials I use a Board Dudes 18″ x 22″ Magnetic Dry Erase Board. It’s a great way to display our flashcards so that I can review them with my eldest.
Enjoy these printables and look for creative ways to add play to your study of the letter “P”. Just for fun, here are a few cute pics of eldest engaging in a few letter “P” activities. Our little “Pirate”
