I’ve been blessed to have some wonderful mentors and educators in my life and all of them have encouraged us to read to our son to help him learn how to communicate.
We’ve discovered some wonderful resources to help little ones learn how to talk and I thought you might enjoy learning about some of the tools that we’ve had success with in our home.
Toddler Books
1. Reading books seems to be one of the best ways to increase vocabulary and comprehension. I’ve included some of our favorite titles in this post (affiliate links included for your convenience – these links will take you to images and a description of each book).
2. Baby Signing Time – a video series you can buy online at: Baby Signing Time {affiliate link}. This has helped our two-year old ask for milk, say “Thank-you”, and let us know when he is “all-done” using sign language. You can follow the link to Amazon where you can also shop for stand-alone DVDs. We have the first four in the series.
3. Talking – We’ve also found that walking him through various activities – cooking, eating, changing clothes, etc. has helped him grasp new terms and vocabulary.
I just thought I’d share what’s on his bookcase, many are library books, and highlight some favorites.
Toddler Books on our Bookcase:
Anything by Sandra Boynton (ex. “The Belly Button Book“)
“Goodnight Moon” by Brown/Hurd
“Cuddle Up, Goodnight” by Cleminson
“The Very Busy Spider” by Eric Carle
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Books (ex. “Sky Watchers”)
“Heaven is Having You” by Andreae and Cabban
“Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?” by Dr. Seuss
“Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?” by Holt
“The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Philomel
“Snuggle Up Sleepy Ones” by Freedman and Macnaughton
“My Mommy and I” by Hallinan (one of my personal favorites)
Our favorite bibles:
“Lift the Flap Bible” by Standard Publishing
“My Read and Rhyme Bible Storybook” by Bowman and Kenney
And three favorites for loving on your little one while reading:
1. God Gave Us You – a cuddly, warm and wonderful story with a mama bear explaining to a baby bear about the family’s hopes and dreams for a baby.
2. I Love you So – a beautifully written and illustrated story that helps children see how much parents love them through the ups and downs of growing up.
3. On the Night You Were Born – Poetic, warm, and written like a song – you repeat your child’s name throughout the story to let them know how special they are.
